Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I find myself now?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is unequivocally one of the more intimidating elements of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day secluding myself in my room due to feeling too daunted to venture out and greet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all started with simple conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what was my takeaway? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embrace one quality, let it be authenticity. There are countless unique individuals across the course and university; you’re sure to find people akin to you.

An additional obstacle I had to navigate was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. The transition from A-levels was significant, and in certain aspects, the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being dropped into such an environment can sometimes challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me cope with that sensation, one being the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re puzzled by something, it’s almost guaranteed that several others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may represent the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and are aware that students face challenges. They connect with students consistently throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I regret not doing it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did step out of my comfort zone by becoming a well-being representative at the start of the year. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with professors, and it’s undoubtedly one of the top actions you can take for your benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available to you. You can never have too much help!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and throughout university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support avenues provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated, and it has equipped me to enjoy my time despite the pressure of looming exams and deadlines.
