Ten months back, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was preparing to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the deep end wasn’t something my formerly shy and reserved personality was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current situation?

One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This undoubtedly stands as one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your key worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can confidently proclaim that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with individuals facing similar situations. So, what did I discover? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you mingle with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. There’s such a wide array of people across the program and university; you’re sure to find individuals like you.

Another challenge was the workload and complexity of the content. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe those around you studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone shares your experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost guarantee that there are at least a few others who also don’t comprehend it. So, seek help. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp during your first year. Request assistance from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They desire your success and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with students and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I did take one at the year’s commencement by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous methods to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance being offered to you. You can never have too much!

Broadly speaking, this year has illuminated the truth that feelings of anxiety, both leading up to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be eased through the multitude of support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
