Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your main worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively say that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it only required engaging in casual conversations with others facing similar challenges. So, what did I discover? I found that taking an initiative at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody anything, be yourself. With diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find like-minded people.

Another obstacle I needed to tackle was the workload and complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and, in many respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others share the same confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a wellbeing representative for my cohort. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this facet of university is to seize the assistance being offered to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has illustrated to me that apprehensive feelings, both before and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be eased by the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has helped me learn how to enjoy myself alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
