Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting back, I recognize an academic year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a ton of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current status?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more apprehensive facets of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day confined to my room, feeling too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. However, sitting here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was sparking small conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I uncover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, I found that if there’s one thing you should embrace, it’s being your authentic self. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
A further challenge I needed to tackle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a shift from A-levels, and in several ways, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can often be challenging for your self-assurance; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same experience as you. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that there are at least a few others who are equally perplexed. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and understand that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with our struggles and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, I wish I had done so earlier. I initially mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to take full advantage of the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of support!
Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be mitigated with the extensive support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never on my own, and it has enabled me to appreciate my time despite the stressors like exams and deadlines.
