Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This often ranks among the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be one of your top concerns. On my initial day settling into my lodging, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day retreating to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Currently, however, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with fellow students in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I found that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is often the best approach. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to meet people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a significant leap from A-levels, and in many respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-confidence; it’s easy to observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty within Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I earlier mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s certainly among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My principal takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much support!

On the whole, this year has illuminated the fact that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased with the myriad of support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
