Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of fun! What insights has this year provided, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day isolated in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever encountered here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance right at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not quite prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse crowd across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was coping with the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a rise from A-levels, and in many respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere can challenge your self-confidence; you may observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few factors supported me through this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same predicament. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you there are others who don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Seek help from both your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty within Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students encounter hurdles. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our matters. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s among the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are typically baseless and can be eased with the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to relish my time even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
