Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved personality was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year offered me, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too scared to step out and engage with others. However, reflecting from this moment, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I’ve discovered that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t sweat it! There are numerous ice-breaking activities and events available to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that authenticity is vital. With such a range of diverse individuals in the program and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another challenge was handling the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a notable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this setting can really challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several strategies helped me navigate this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, I can almost assure you others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the difficulties students face. They show understanding towards students and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t make full use of the support services until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is highly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with the faculty, and it is one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance being provided. You can never have excessive support!
In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support services available from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never isolated, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
