Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?
One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges was forging friendships. This aspect of beginning university can be quite intimidating, and if you’re considering this as a potential student, it might be one of your major concerns. On my very first day moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluding myself in my room due to my overwhelming fear of stepping out to greet others. As I sit here today, I can assert that I’ve fostered some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to encourage interaction with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s genuine. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are certain to find kindred spirits.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was unquestionably a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment doesn’t always do wonders for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors helped me navigate through that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that there are several others who are equally lost. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to acquire in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking jumps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance being provided. You can never have too much support!
In general, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated by the plethora of support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I am never alone and has shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst sources of stress like exams and deadlines.
