Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Now, in hindsight, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting challenges of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my housing, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day retreating to my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. However, today I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in light conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking risks at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. I also figured out that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who click with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a progression from A-levels, and in many respects, an even more significant jump from the first semester to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be hard on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me manage that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly promise that others are equally confused. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask your classmates or the faculty for help!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They are committed to your success and understand the challenges students face. They connect with students and ensure ongoing communication about our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking risks earlier – I indeed took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the available support. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to enjoy life even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
