Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Taking such a significant step was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Reflecting back, I observe a year rich in personal development, challenges, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This aspect of commencing university is undoubtedly one of the most daunting, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be your primary concern. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before the term began, I spent the entire day secluded in my room because I felt too daunted to venture out and greet others. However, sitting here today, I can say with confidence that I have formed some of the best friendships I have ever known, here at this university and in this course. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was sharing small conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance right at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, be authentic. There are so many varied individuals within the course and university; you are sure to find people similar to you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even bigger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Some factors aided me during that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experience. If you’re struggling to understand something, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a few others who are in the same boat. So, reach out for help. This may well be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Seek assistance from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I referenced taking leaps previously – I took one at the year’s commencement by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this part of university life is to make the most of the support available to you. You can never have an excess of it!

On a broader scope, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be eased with the varied support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to have fun alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
