Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and unsure about what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and withdrawn self was familiar with. Looking back at the past academic year, I recognize a journey rich with personal development, obstacles, and substantial enjoyment. But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This certainly ranks among the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student perusing this, it may be one of your largest apprehensions. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet people. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with light conversation with others in like circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a plunge at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, fear not! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events designed to foster connections with others. I also realized that if you can embrace one thing, let it be your true self. With a myriad of diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the heavy workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you may observe your peers studying and feel less capable. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something isn’t clear to you, I can nearly guarantee there are others who also find it unclear. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most critical lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to seek help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter hurdles. They empathize with us and maintain continuous communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I noted the importance of taking leaps at the start; I did make one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to get to know the staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the finest things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this area of university is to capitalize on the help that’s available to you. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be diminished with the myriad of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
