Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future that awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was something my formerly introverted and reserved self was not familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of joy! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current situation?
One of the primary and most intimidating challenges I encountered was establishing friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room because I felt too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can boast that I have formed some of the finest friendships I have ever cultivated, right here at this university and within this course. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in casual conversation with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this experience? I learned that it’s always wise to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it’s to be yourself. There are countless diverse individuals across the course and university; you’re bound to meet like-minded people.
Another obstacle I had to navigate was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation as you. If you do not grasp something, I can nearly assure you that there are several others who also do not comprehend it. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek assistance from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They connect with students and provide ongoing communication about our challenges throughout the year. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the support extended to you. You can never have too much!
Overall, this year has revealed to me that feelings of apprehension, both before and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be mitigated by the numerous support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to relish my experience even amidst pressures like examinations and deadlines.
