Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Today, though, I can assertively say I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever encountered during my time at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with some casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that if you can embody one thing, make it being yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter others like you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me overcome that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same struggle. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are in the same boat. So, ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to master in the first year. Seek support from your peers and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The instructors in Materials are fantastic. They desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain consistent dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I spoke about taking risks earlier – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance you’re provided. You can never have an excess of support!

All in all, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased with the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
