Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One initial and significant challenge was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating aspects of entering university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be a primary worry for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Yet, as I sit here today, I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I glean from this experience? I learned that it’s advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not completely prepared or feel uncomfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one trait, be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to discover those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more substantial shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can impact your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel unqualified. A few strategies assisted me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to take away from your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This role helped me connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have an excess of assistance!

To sum it up, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support mechanisms provided by the faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to relish my time while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
