By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I felt nervous and uncertain about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Facing the unknown was a challenge for someone who had always been shy. Looking back now, I realize it’s been a year full of personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is commonly one of the most anxiety-inducing elements of beginning university, and it may be a significant worry for prospective students. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just before the term commenced, I remained in my room throughout the day, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best relationships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual chats with others in similar circumstances. What did I discover? It’s advantageous to take the initiative at the onset of the academic year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There are plenty of ice-breaker chances and events designed to help you meet others. Additionally, if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share your interests.

Another hurdle was the amount of work and the difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and an even steeper rise from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can undermine your confidence; seeing others study might lead you to feel inadequate. What helped me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson from your first year. Look for support from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the available support. You can never have an excess of that!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often groundless and can be eased by the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
