Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was socializing. This aspect is frequently one of the most fear-inducing when beginning university, and if you happen to be an incoming student, it may be your foremost worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both within this university and my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all initiated through casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what lesson did I glean? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t worry! Numerous ice-breaking activities and events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to discover those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-confidence; seeing others study might make you feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one of which was the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re grappling with a concept, I can almost guarantee that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter challenges. They relate to students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I indeed took one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My main takeaway from this component of university is to fully utilize the available assistance. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support resources provided by staff and other students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
