By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my traditionally shy self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich with personal growth, challenges, and plenty of fun! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is usually one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and mingle with others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships here at university and in my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all thanks to initiating small conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned it’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that being true to yourself is essential. With an array of diverse people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another challenge was the academic workload and complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant advancement from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me connect with staff members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main message is to leverage the assistance provided. You can never receive too much support!
All in all, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be eased with the support available from faculty and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
