By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved nature was used to. Upon reflection, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where am I today?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university is frequently one of the most frightening, and if you’re a prospective student, it could be a significant worry for you. On the inaugural day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too fearful to emerge and interact with others. Presently, I can assert that I have developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, stemming from casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance right at the onset of the year is essential. If you’re not ready or at ease just yet, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events await to help you connect with fellow students. I also discovered that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse group of people across the program and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another hurdle was the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was a noticeable escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. A few things supported me through this sensation, one being the realization that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek guidance from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to achieve success and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us about our concerns throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking risks previously – I embarked on one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your well-being! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the support provided. You can never have an excess of that!

All in all, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the various support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like examinations and deadlines.
