Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Now, in retrospect, I can see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and much enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it may be among your top worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can confidently affirm that I’ve made some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I’ve established a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what did I learn? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always a wise move. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be myriad ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you connect with fellow students. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse crowd throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another hurdle I faced was the workload and complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being thrust into such an environment can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and question your own abilities. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and keep constant lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I spoke about making leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much guidance!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased by the support services provided by staff and peers. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to enjoy myself even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
