Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize a period of personal development, obstacles, and considerable enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks among the most frightening elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it likely weighs heavily on your mind. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day concealing myself in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, I can say with assurance that I have forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this experience? I’ve realized that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the year’s onset. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fear not! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and campus, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and the difficulty of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in many respects, an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being thrust into such a challenging setting can shake your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something confounds you, I can almost assure you that others are confused too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so sooner. I spoke of taking risks before – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various avenues through which to become acquainted with the faculty, and it is unquestionably one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this part of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be mitigated with the support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has revealed how to find enjoyment amid pressures such as exams and deadlines.
