Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self knew how to handle. Looking back now, I view this past year as one filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently regarded as one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term commencement, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. Today, however, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most amazing friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I gleaned? I’ve realized that taking a risk at the start of the year is always the best approach. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with peers. I’ve also learned that being genuine is crucial. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the program and university, you are bound to encounter kindred spirits.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can shake your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the insight that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could very well be the most vital lesson for your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They relate to us and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps—I took one at the year’s commencement by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the opportunities for help that are presented. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never isolated and how to have fun despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
