Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back at the past academic year, I perceive a path of personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you’re a new student, it could be a major worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with peers in similar situations. So, what insights did I acquire? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, worry not! There will be many ice-breaking occasions and activities to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being genuine is essential. With a multitude of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and content complexity. There was a significant shift from A-levels, and an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me in overcoming this feeling was the realization that everyone is in a similar situation. If you find something confusing, I can nearly assure you that others are also having difficulties. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the staff for help!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students endure. They connect with students and maintain ongoing communication regarding our issues throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done it earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I took one at the outset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to liaise with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to utilize the help that is available. You can never have too much assistance!

Overall, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of nervousness, both pre-university and during, are often baseless and can be eased with the various support systems accessible through staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment, despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
