Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was meeting new people. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Today, though, I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I found that it’s best to embrace opportunities at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to meet others who share your perspective.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some cases, a more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can test your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. What aided me in overcoming this sensation was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to understand something, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek support from your peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The instructors in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They relate to our experiences and keep in touch throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – one of those was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the support that’s available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has taught me that the anxious feelings preceding and during university are often baseless and can be mitigated by the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
