Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and enjoyable experiences! But what insights have I gained, and what is my status now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be your greatest concern. On my initial day moving into accommodation, a few days prior to the term kicking off, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too scared to step out and introduce myself. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known during my time at university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year often yields the best results. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking opportunities and activities designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With the numerous diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are certain to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the demands of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a notable transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can test your self-esteem; you might witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me through this sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you struggle to grasp a concept, I can nearly guarantee others are in the same boat. So, seek assistance. This could be the single most crucial lesson to master in the first year. Reach out for help from peers and staff!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students endure. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication concerning our challenges throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I previously mentioned taking chances – I took a significant one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it stands out as one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!

On a broader scale, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of apprehension, both before and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be soothed through the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone and how to find joy even in the face of pressures like exams and deadlines.
