Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year rich with personal development, hurdles, and ample enjoyment! So, what insights has this year provided me with, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most overwhelming challenges was forming friendships. This is definitely one of the more daunting components of starting university, and if you are a potential student, it may be one of your greatest apprehensions. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the semester beginning, I spent the whole day locked away in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, reflecting from this point, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family right here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar scenarios. So, what did I take away from this experience? I learned that it’s crucial to take a leap of faith at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker moments and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one principle, it should be to be yourself. With so many diverse individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people like yourself.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always the easiest for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can virtually guarantee there are others who share your confusion. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from fellow students and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding toward students and keep in touch with us consistently throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is extremely beneficial. There are many opportunities to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most rewarding actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. There’s no such thing as too much support!
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has also shown me that I am never alone and taught me how to enjoy my experience alongside pressures like exams and deadlines.
