Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back on the previous academic year, I can see a path filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your top worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day concealed in my room because I was too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in small talk with individuals experiencing similar feelings. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that taking a leap at the outset of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events will arise to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, it’s to be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others like you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and difficulty of the content. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few elements helped me cope with that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who also don’t comprehend it. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during the first year. Reach out for help from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and understand that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearing its end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned previously about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to forge connections with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance being offered to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the abundant support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has illuminated how to find joy alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
