Ten months have passed since October 2022, a time when I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in unfamiliar territory was not something my formerly timid self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey rich with personal growth, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of entering university, and for prospective students, it may be a significant worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes began, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had during my time at university. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others facing similar circumstances. So, what did I gain from this experience? I realized it’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous activities designed to break the ice and help you engage with others. I also discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group of people in the program and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your mindset.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant shift from A-levels, and an even more considerable leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can impact your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What benefited me was reminding myself that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, chances are others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most vital lesson during the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty within Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain regular communication with us all year long. Although I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had accessed it earlier. I talked about taking risks – I did this by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely valuable. There are many avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to leverage the available support. You can never have too much assistance!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety related to university are often misplaced and can be soothed with the help available from both staff and peers. I’ve realized that I’m never alone and that it’s possible to have a good time despite the stress associated with exams and deadlines.
