Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a new student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This can indeed be one of the most daunting facets of entering university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, feeling too intimidated to step out and interact with others. Sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual chats with others in similar situations. So, what’s the lesson? I discovered that taking a leap at the start of the year is crucial. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you mingle with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to connect with like-minded people.
Another challenge was the increased workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can nearly assure you that there are others who also struggle. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to absorb in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and understand that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I spoke earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the opportunities for assistance that are presented to you. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased through the various support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
