Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reticent self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! So, what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are a future student reading this, it may be among your top worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself. Today, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life, both at this institution and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I learned that taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you aren’t quite prepared or feel at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re likely to find those who click with you.
Another obstacle was coping with the academic workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was significant, and, in some regards, the difference from the first term to the second was even greater. Being thrust into this atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. Several strategies helped me overcome that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same situation. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that others do too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for assistance from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They are committed to your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They sympathize with us and maintain regular communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year wellness representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it is one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the wide array of support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to relish my time despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
