By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was meeting new people. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your major apprehensions. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, reflecting today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated from casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a plunge at the year’s start is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few aspects helped me get past that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are facing the same challenge. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the single most critical lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for help from both your peers and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize with students and maintain continuous communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and it’s definitely one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My main lesson from this dimension of university life is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m not alone, and it’s demonstrated how to enjoy myself amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
