Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself anxious and uncertain about the future as I embarked on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often stands out as one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and for prospective students, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my dorm a few days prior to the term, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the finest friends here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? It’s essential to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse array of people in the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of content. There was undoubtedly a notable increase from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can diminish your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me through this, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you struggle to grasp something, likely others do too. So, seek assistance. This may be one of the most crucial lessons to learn during the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are amazing. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They empathize and consistently engage with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t make the most of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are countless ways to connect with the staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much!

Ultimately, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness concerning university are often unfounded and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has illustrated that I am never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
