Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was poised to embark on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is often one of the most frightening when starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day of moving into my housing, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others experiencing similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is advantageous. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also found that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Existing in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was the realization that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling with a concept, I can almost assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most valuable lesson of the first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can undertake! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the available support from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
