Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights has this year offered, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This certainly ranks among the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days before classes began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too scared to step outside and meet anyone. However, today I can proudly state that I have forged some of the best friendships of my life here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations among peers. So, what did I learn? I realized that making the effort to engage at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate connections with others. I also came to understand that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re certain to find those who click with you.

Another obstacle was dealing with the workload and the intricacy of the material. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some ways, an even more substantial jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that we are all sailing in the same boat. If something isn’t clear, I can almost assure you that others are grappling with the same confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This could well be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to excel and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until near the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I previously mentioned the importance of taking risks – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many opportunities to engage with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My main takeaway from this element of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have an excess of help!

In conclusion, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the various support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never isolated and has shown me how to find enjoyment in the midst of challenges like exams and deadlines.
