Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. As I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student, stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I can recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gathered this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more concerning facets of commencing university life, and if you are an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my first day of moving into accommodations, a few days ahead of term starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and connect with others. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships here at university and within my program. I have found a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking risks at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re feeling unsure or uneasy, don’t stress! There are numerous ice-breaking activities designed to help you bond with others. I also learned that being genuine is essential. With the diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another significant challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a notable increase in difficulty from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Existing in such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe peers studying and feel insufficient. What assisted me was reminding myself that everyone is navigating the same circumstances. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others do as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might just be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask peers and staff for support!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to prosper and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is tremendously valuable. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and it is one of the best advantages you can give yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much help!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and has taught me how to find joy even amidst pressures like examinations and deadlines.
