Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may loom large in your mind. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what wisdom have I gained? I learned that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breaking and events to foster connections. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals at the course and university, you’re bound to find those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity and complexity of the workload. There was certainly a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always easy for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in managing this sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something doesn’t click for you, I can nearly assure you that there are others in the same situation. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most essential lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with student concerns and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most positive actions you can undertake for yourself! My key takeaway from this dimension of university life is to leverage the assistance available. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated with the various support mechanisms accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has illustrated to me that I’m never truly alone and has equipped me with the ability to enjoy myself in spite of pressures like exams and deadlines.
