Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about the future as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the more frightening elements of starting university, and if you’re considering enrolling, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days ahead of the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, far too nervous to venture out and meet new people. Now, sitting here today, I can assert that I have made some of the closest friends I’ve ever encountered at this university and in this course. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, all from engaging in small talks with those experiencing similar situations. So, what did I discover? I’ve realized that it’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a varied range of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share your interests.

Another challenge was handling the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and an even more significant transition from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A couple of things supported me through this, one being the realization that everyone is navigating the same path. If something doesn’t click for you, I can almost assure you that others are facing the same issue. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most essential lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They truly want you to succeed and understand the issues students encounter. They relate to us and keep constant communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety about university are often unwarranted and can be eased by the support available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
