By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Exploring the unfamiliar was not the norm for my previously introverted and reserved self. Looking back now, I recognize a year that has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was establishing friendships. This is often one of the most nerve-wracking parts of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it might be your primary worry. On my inaugural day moving into my housing, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With such a wide array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who align with you.

Another obstacle was handling the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, a substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might see peers studying and feel inferior. A few factors helped me surmount this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in the first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to triumph and understand the hurdles students encounter. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never receive too much!

Ultimately, this year has illustrated to me that the anxious feelings leading up to and during university are often baseless and can be eased by the various support options available from faculty and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never alone, and I’ve figured out how to enjoy myself amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
