Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my once shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back on the previous academic year, I recognize a path filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of entering university, and if you are an incoming student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too fearful to venture out and engage with others. Today, however, I can proudly assert that I have formed some of the best friendships during my time at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all originated from having casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean from this? It’s best to take a leap right at the start of the year. If you aren’t ready or feel uncomfortable, don’t be concerned! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that authenticity is essential. With the wide array of diverse individuals throughout the program and institution, you are certain to encounter those who resonate with your personality.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. I noticed a significant increase from A-levels, followed by an even steeper rise from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can challenge your confidence; you may observe your peers studying and feel less capable. What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same experience. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most important lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and faculty for assistance!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They are empathetic and consistently communicate with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps before – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the staff, and it is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support provided. You can never have an excess!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness regarding university are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated with the support accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has illustrated to me that I’m not alone and taught me how to find enjoyment despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
