Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and an abundance of fun! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating parts of beginning university, and if you’re a future student reading this, it could be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and it commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I grasp? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also found that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With such a diverse range of people across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and to some extent, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one of which was the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are in the same predicament. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to acquire in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and staff!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students experience difficulties. They empathize with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had capitalized on it earlier. I mentioned taking chances – I undertook one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of it!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are almost always baseless and can be mitigated by the multitude of support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment while navigating stressors such as exams and deadlines.
