Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what have I gleaned from this year, and where do I find myself now?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is often considered one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it might be among your primary worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to emerge and meet people. Fast forward to today, I can assertively say that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, all starting from casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what have I realized? I realized that taking a step forward at the onset of the year is always advantageous. If you aren’t quite prepared or feel uneasy, fret not! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that being authentic is crucial. With an array of diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re bound to discover those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was coping with the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in many respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting can challenge your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in navigating that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that others are experiencing the same issue. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students endure. They show understanding towards students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke about taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance being provided. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the numerous support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary and how to find joy alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
