Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of beginning my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Jumping into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more overwhelming aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be at the forefront of your worries. On my initial day of moving into my housing, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to step outside and introduce myself. However, today, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, starting from light conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling with a concept, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to take away from your first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the outset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this facet of university life is to seize the support you’re offered. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment amid challenges like exams and deadlines.
