Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was something my previously reserved self was not used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes, I remained in my room all day, too frightened to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all originated from casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I’ve realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that if you can be anything, be genuine. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
A further challenge was the volume of work and complexity of the content. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you’re confused about something, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek assistance from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and keep constant communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university is to seize the support you are provided. You can never have too much!
All in all, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support options available from the faculty and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never alone and how to relish my time amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
