Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was making new friends. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening facets of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my first day moving into my dorm, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day perched in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. However, reflecting on today, I can assert that I have formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all started with engaging in casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to meet those who click with you.

Another challenge was handling the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can impact your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me combat that sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating their own challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. So, reach out for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy toward students and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year was drawing to a close, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned before about taking chances – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available. There’s no such thing as too much!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated by the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
