Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This often stands as one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may loom large in your mind. On my initial day of moving into my new living space, mere days before the term commenced, I remained in my room the whole day, too daunted to step out and meet people. However, today I can affirmatively state that I’ve made some of the best friends within both the university and my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with peers in akin situations. So, what did I glean? Taking a chance at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or at ease, that’s alright! Numerous ice-breaker gatherings will be available to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

A further challenge was the heavy workload and the complexity of the content. There was a noticeable transition from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can really affect your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most important lesson to grasp during the first year. Ask for help from both classmates and staff!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the hurdles students encounter. They are sympathetic and maintain open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully harness the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I took one by stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This provided me with the opportunity to connect with the staff, which is extremely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson learned is to make the most of the support available. There’s no such thing as too much help!

All in all, this year has revealed that feelings of nervousness, both pre and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be diminished through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amid pressures such as exams and deadlines.
