Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. So, what lessons have I gleaned, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was making friends. This is often one of the most daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to exit and introduce myself to others. Presently, I can say with confidence that I have formed some of the best friendships I have ever experienced, both at this university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with brief conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a chance at the commencement of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another challenge presented was the workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was noticeably significant, and in many ways, an even larger jump occurred from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can impact your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t comprehend something, I can almost assure you others don’t as well. Therefore, seek help. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp during your first year. Reach out for assistance from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff within Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the difficulties that students encounter. They connect with students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and this is one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In conclusion, this year has imparted to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the extensive support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has highlighted to me that I am never alone and has taught me how to enjoy myself despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
