Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Jumping into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of fun! But what insights have I gained this year, and what’s my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This can be among the most daunting aspects of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day locked in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. What did I realize? It’s advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, do not fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Furthermore, if you can be anything, be yourself. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and even more from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can influence your confidence; witnessing others studying might leave you feeling insufficient. What aided me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, chances are others feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Look for support from both peers and staff!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I spoke of taking leaps – I took one by stepping up as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is priceless. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can undertake for yourself! My key message is to leverage the support that is available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has demonstrated that apprehensive feelings about university are often baseless and can be mitigated with the assistance available from faculty and peers. I’ve come to understand that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
