Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Plunging into uncharted territory was not something my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This often ranks among the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be one of your primary concerns. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to go out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best bonds here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with simple conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a step out of your comfort zone at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that being genuine is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and the university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the volume and complexity of the coursework. There was a significant shift from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can test your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and start to feel insufficient. What helped me was the realization that everyone is in the same situation. If you struggle to grasp a concept, chances are others do too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This transitions me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I spoke about taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best advantages you can give yourself! My main takeaway is to make the most of the available assistance. You can never have an excess!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support accessible from staff and fellow students. I’ve come to realize that I’m never alone and how to relish my experience despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
