Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my position now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your foremost worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to emerge and interact with others. Today, however, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also found that being yourself is essential. With such a diverse range of people throughout the course and university, you’re likely to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things supported me through these feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is in a similar situation. If you don’t comprehend something, I can nearly guarantee others don’t as well. So, reach out for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek support from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In conclusion, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be lessened through the many support avenues offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy in spite of pressures like exams and deadlines.
