Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t an experience my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I realize this year has been full of personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be among your biggest concerns. On my initial day settling into residence, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to go out and meet others. Nowadays, I can proudly say that I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships here at university and within my course. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with those in parallel situations. So, what did I discover? Taking a chance at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, don’t worry! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that being authentic is fundamental. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and campus, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another obstacle was juggling the workload and the complexity of content. There was a discernible increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can impact your confidence; you may witness others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me during this time was remembering that everyone faces similar challenges. If you don’t comprehend something, it’s likely that others are struggling as well. Hence, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most vital lesson from the first year. Seek guidance from fellow students and staff!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain open channels of communication throughout the year regarding any concerns. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position facilitated my connection with staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have an excess of it!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased by the multitude of support resources available from staff and fellow students. It’s demonstrated that I’m never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
