By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with light conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what has been my takeaway? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a risk at the start of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a wide array of people throughout the course and university, you’ll surely encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere can challenge your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A couple of elements assisted me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating this together. If you’re struggling with something, I can almost assure you that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the paramount lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students often face challenges. They express understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously spoke about taking risks – I embraced one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the staff, and it’s among the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary conclusion from this segment of university life is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has instructed me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated by the various support resources accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has revealed how to have a good time despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
